Sochi Olympic Games 2014

  • The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXII Olympic Winter Games, were a major international multi-sport event held in Sochi, Russia.
  • Held between 7–23 February 2014, it is the first Olympics in Russia since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Soviet Union was the host nation for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.
  • More than 2,800 athletes from 88 countries arrived inSochi, competing for a record 98 sets of medals. The Games in Sochi were broadcast by 464 channels worldwide.
  • The President of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee was Dmitry Chernyshenko.
  • A number of new competitions—a total of 12 accounting for gender—were held during the Games, including biathlon mixed relay, women’s ski jumping, mixed-team figure skating, mixed-team luge, half-pipe skiing, ski and snowboard slopestyle, and snowboard parallel slalom.

  • The events were held around two clusters of new venues: an Olympic Park constructed in Sochi’s Imeretinsky Valley on the coast of the Black Sea, with Fisht Olympic Stadium, and the Games’ indoor venues located within walking distance, and snow events in the resort settlement of Krasnaya Polyana.
  • The lead-up to the 2014 Games was marked by several major controversies. These included allegations of corruption leading to the aforementioned cost overruns and concerns for the safety and human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) athletes, spectators and supporters during the Games due to the country’s recently adopted “propaganda” law, which led to ongoing, Olympic-focused protests.

  • Sochi was elected on 4 July 2007 during the 119th International Olympic Committee (IOC) session held in Guatemala City, Guatemala, defeating bids from Salzburg, Austria; and Pyeongchang, South Korea.
  • A record 88 nations qualified to compete, which beat the previous record of 82 set at the previous Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
  • Seven nations—Dominica, Malta, Paraguay, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tonga, and Zimbabwe—made their debut in this Winter Olympics .
  • Russia’s athletes topped the Sochi medals table, with a record 13 golds and 33 total. It represented a stunning turnaround from the 2010 Vancouver Games. 
  • The IOC President Thomas Bach praises the successful organization and coordinated of the Olympic Games in Sochi amongst all participants.

INDIA AT SOCHI OLYMPICS:

  • Three athletes represented India at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi
  • They initially entered the competition as Independent Olympic participants, competing under the Olympic flag, as the Indian Olympic Association had been suspended by the IOC since 2012.
  • However, on 11 February 2014 the IOC reinstated the India’s NOC after they held an election, allowing the two athletes that still had competitions planned to compete under the Indian flag rather than as independent athletes.
