‘’National Handloom Day’’ is celebrated on 7th August every year since 2015, to generate awareness about the importance of handloom industry and its contribution to the socio-economic development of the country. One of the key objectives of this initiative is to promote Handlooms, increase income of weavers and enhance pride in their work.
Continuing with the practice, Office of Development Commissioner for Handlooms, New Delhi has planned a week-long mix of activities such as exclusive exhibitions, social media campaign, screening of short-films/ documentary and other fitting events across the country coinciding with the main function to be held on 7th August 2024 at New Delhi, to celebrate the day in a befitting fashion for promotion of Handlooms.
This year Handloom Day will be celebrated in the prominent 75 Handloom clusters/ pockets by the Weavers’ Service Centres (WSCs), in the presence of local Members of Parliament, MLAs, designers, awardees, weavers and other stake holders with promotional activities on handlooms. The key objective is to promote Handlooms, support Handloom sector and enhance pride of handloom weavers.
The Development Commissioner, Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, is hosting the following activities on MyGov Portal as a part of this year’s National Handloom Day celebrations with a view to popularize handlooms amongst citizens.
The activities scheduled on MyGov portal are-
- Handloom Quiz contest: to be hosted from August 7th to 10th, 2024
- Pledge to use Indian Handloom: LIVE from July 16th to August 15th, 2024 at https://pledge.mygov.in/indian-handloom-2024/
- Selfie contest : Selfie with Indian Handloom–live from July 16th to August 15th, 2024 at https://www.mygov.in/task/selfie-indian-handloom/
- Designing a Souvenir : Design a Handloom Souvenir- LIVE from July 16th to August 15th, 2024 at https://www.mygov.in/task/design-handloom-souvenir/
Accordingly, Weavers’ Service Centre, Mumbai is organizing a function to celebrate the 10th National Handloom Day at Shri Parmeswar Vithoba Mone Hall, 18/11, Madhavnagar, MIDC Road, Opposite Raghvendra Tower.Solapur-413006 on 7th August 2024 from 09.00 A.M. to 5.00 P.M. The programmes to be held on that day are as follows:
- Dissemination of major initiative for development of handloom sector (Block Level Cluster, India Handloom Brand, Handloom Mark, MUDRA Scheme, Insurance Scheme, e-commerce, e- Dhaga, GI etc.)
- Presentation of Local success stories
- Interaction with weavers.
- Exhibition of Design/Samples & products of WSC, Mumbai
The dignitaries present on the occasion will include National Awardees, Sant Kabir Awardees and National Merit Certificate Holders, besides designers, state organizations related to textiles and weavers’ co-operative societies from all over Maharashtra and also local representatives and corporators.
