As per available data, the number of steel plants producing crude steel in the country were 901 in 2021-22 with a total capacity of 154.06 million tonnes. The details of State-wise steel production in country are given at Annexure-I. Steel being a deregulated sector, the role of the Government is that of a facilitator. Decisions such as revival/closure of steel plants are taken by individual steel companies from time to time, based on commercial considerations and market dynamics.
There are two steel manufacturing Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) under Ministry of Steel namely Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL). The details of targets/achievements of steel production of public sector plants during the last five years is as follows: –

Both CPSEs do not fall under the category of sick CPSEs. The data/information on profit/loss of private sector steel plants is not maintained by the Government.
