In a display of collaboration, CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), Goa, organized an interaction on August 22, 2023, uniting maritime safety personnel and scientific explorers. The event, held to honor the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) for their pivotal role in ensuring the safety of the RV Sindhu Sadhana during the SSD-087 expedition in July 2023, marked a synergy between oceanographic researchers and maritime guardians.
The event aimed to commemorate and express gratitude for the crucial role played by ICG in ensuring the safety of the research vessel RV Sindhu Sadhana during expedition SSD-087 in July 2023. The day commenced with the commanding officer and crew members of ICGS “Sujeet” being warmly welcomed by the Director, CSIR-NIO.
The focal point of the event was an interaction session, during which the scientific researchers shared their remarkable experiences and challenges encountered in advancing the Blue Economy. This knowledge exchange between the scientific community and the coast guard plays a vital role in fortifying India’s prosperity in the maritime realm. The event showcased the synergy between CSIR-NIO and the Indian Coast Guard, emphasizing the crucial role of collaboration in securing India’s maritime interests and promoting its economic growth.
It is worth recollecting that the Indian Coast Guard’s swift and efficient response during a daring rescue operation not only saved 36 lives but also averted a potential environmental catastrophe. On July 26, 2023, the Research Vessel ‘Sindhu Sadhana,’ owned by CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, found itself in distress and drifting perilously towards Karwar, carrying eight scientists and a total crew of 36 individuals.
