Actor Dilip Kumar laid to rest with full state honours

Veteran actor Dilip Kumar who passed away this morning after a prolonged illness was laid to rest with full state honours in Mumbai, today. President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Defence Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh, I&B Minister Shri Prakash Javadekar and leading figures from the film industry and from other spheres of society have condoled the death of Dilip Kumar.

Condoling the actor’s death, the President said that an era ends with his demise. “The thespian’s charm transcended all boundaries, and he was loved across the subcontinent. Dilip Saab will live forever in the heart of India.”

Vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu expressed profound grief over the demise of legendary thespian Shri Dilip Kumar. The Vice President said that his death had created an irreplaceable void in the field of cinema. “Although known by the sobriquet ‘Tragedy King’, the legendary thespian was one of the most versatile actors & essayed a variety of roles from social dramas to romantic hero with equal felicity.”

Defence Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh said that Dilip Kumar’s demise is monumental loss to the Indian cinema.

 

I had met Dilip Kumar ji in person when I went to Mumbai to present the Padma Vibhushan to
him. It was a special moment for me to interact with the legendary actor.

His demise is monumental loss to the Indian cinema. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and fans.

Offering tribute to the late actor, the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shri Prakash Javadekar said that the way in which Dilip Kumar presented his art was unparalleled.

Director General (West Zone), Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Manish Desai visited the legendary actor’s Bandra residence. He met his wife Mrs. Saira Banu and other family members and expressed deepest condolences on behalf of the Prime Minister of India.

For his contribution to cinema, Dilip Kumar was conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1994), India’s highest award in the art form. He also received the Padma Vibhushan (2015), the second-highest civilian award of the country.

The actor also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, from 2000 to 2006.

Dilip Kumar was 98. He is survived by wife Saira Banu.
