Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2024 Inaugurated, Unveiling 25 Years of Theatrical Excellence

The Bharat Rang Mahotsav (BRM 2024), recognized as the world’s largest theatre festival, was inaugurated at National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai today. The event was graced by Shri. Ramesh Bais, Governor of Maharashtra, alongside National School of Drama Chairperson Shri. Paresh Rawal and veteran actor Sh. Raghubir Yadav, marking the opening of this significant cultural celebration.

Spanning from February 1st to 21st, 2024, BRM 2024 will unfold across 15 cities, featuring a diverse array of over 150 performances. Beyond the captivating theatrical presentations, the festival will offer a comprehensive program comprising workshops, discussions, and master classes, fostering a vibrant celebration of both Indian and global theatre traditions.

This edition holds special significance as it commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Bharat Rang Mahotsav, bringing together theatre enthusiasts, artists, and scholars in a testament to cultural richness and artistic exchange. The festival’s overarching theme, ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, Vande Bharangam,’ underscores the importance of global unity, emphasizing social harmony through the powerful medium of performing arts.

Reflecting on the event, Governor Shri. Ramesh Bais remarked on the festival’s power to unite hearts, bridge differences, and cultivate shared understanding through the universal language of the performing arts.

NSD Director Chittaranjan Tripathy expressed profound enthusiasm for the festival, emphasizing its commitment to artistic excellence and cultural diversity. He highlighted the festival’s role in showcasing global theatre traditions and fostering collaboration within the theatrical realm.

In Mumbai, the cultural extravaganza commenced today, captivating audiences for six exhilarating days and concluding with a grand closing ceremony at Mukti Cultural Hub on February 6th, 2024. The festival features six plays spanning various genres and languages.It commenced with the compelling play ‘Tajmahal Ka Tender’, an original Hindi satire directed by Shri Chittaranjan Tripathy, written by Ajay Shukla, and  performed by NSD Repertory Company, and will be followed by a diverse array of productions, including ‘GAJAB TICHI ADA’ by Rangpeeth Theatre, Mumbai, ‘BABUJI’ by NSD Repertory Company, New Delhi, ‘THE ZOO STORY’ by Panchkosi, Delhi, ‘TODI MILL FANTASY’ by Theatre Flamingo, Goa, and ‘SWAHA’ by Darpan, Lucknow.

In an innovative move, this year NSD is also introducing Rang Haat, an annual initiative aimed at establishing Asia’s inaugural global theatre market and nurturing international collaborations in the theatrical domain. Rang Haat will unite theatre artists, programmers, patrons, and supporters, fostering the discovery of hidden talent, showcasing international projects, and facilitating both creative and financial partnerships. Participants will gain exposure to a broader audience, fostering potential collaborative ventures and injecting dynamism into the global theatre landscape.

The 25th year of the festival promises a nationwide celebration of the transformative power of theatre, with events in parallel venues across Mumbai, Pune, Bhuj, Vijayawada, Jodhpur, Dibrugarh, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Ramnagar, and Srinagar. Additionally, BRM 2024 introduces Rang Haat, Asia’s inaugural global theatre market, fostering international collaborations and providing a platform for artists, programmers, patrons, and supporters.

Beyond the stage, BRM 2024 offers enriching experiences, including exhibitions, director-audience dialogues, discussions, seminars, masterclasses with veteran thespians, and the vibrant Rang Haat. Attendees can explore diverse offerings at the Food Bazaar, immersing themselves in the spirit of theatre.
