Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) officials from Mumbai Branch Office-I, conducted an Enforcement raid at a jewellery shop in Andheri East on Sunday (November 5, 2023). Quickly acting on information received regarding violation of Hallmarking of Gold and Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020, the BIS team raided M/S.Variety Jewellers, Shop No. 02, Cyril Gonsalves Chawl, Cardinal Gracious Road, near Shivsena Office Chakala, Andheri(E), Mumbai-400099. During the raid it was found that the Jewellery Shop was selling gold jewellery without BIS hallmark and old hallmarking that existed prior to 1st July 2021. Substantial quantity of gold jewellery without BIS hallmark & old hallmarking (which existed prior to 1st July 2021) found during the raid were seized, as per the provisions of Section 15(3) & 17(1) of BIS Act 2016. The violation of Section 15(3) A 17(1) of BIS Act 2016 is punishable with imprisonment up to two years or a fine of minimum Rs. 2,00,000 or both as per BIS Act 2016. Action is being initiated to file a case in the court of law for the offence, informed Shri Satish Kumar, Senior Director and Head of Mumbai Branch Office-1.
As per BIS Act, 2016, No person shall exhibit for sale any such goods which are covered under Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020 without BIS hallmark, except under a valid license. Therefore, all consumers are encouraged to use BIS CARE App (available both in Mobile Android and iOS) to find out the list of mandatory products which shall be BIS certified and are also requested to ascertain the genuineness of Hallmark on the product before making purchase, by visiting BIS website https://www.bis.gov.in/. Citizens are requested that in case they come across any instance where mandatory products are being sold without BIS certification, or where misuse of Hallmark on any product is happening, the same may be informed to the Head, MUBO-I, Western Regional Office, BIS, 5th Floor, CETTM Complex, Hiranandani Gardens, Powai, Mumbai – 400076.
