Department of Orthopaedics and Spine Surgery, Military Hospital Khadki and Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune organised the first “AFMC Khadki Spine Cadaveric Course 2023” on 14-15 Oct 2023. The cadaveric workshop was organized in association with Department of Anatomy, AFMC under aegis of Pune Orthopaedic Society.
The ever-evolving field of spine surgery encompasses spinal surgeries that require access to the spine through the posterior approach routinely. However, the less commonly practiced and relatively tougher approaches for spinal surgeries include the access through the chest wall and abdomen for better surgical outcomes. Hence, the theme of the cadaveric workshop was focused on “Thoracic and Abdominal anterior exposures”, required to perform the spinal surgery procedures including thoracotomy, retroperitoneal abdominal surgery for anterior lumbar fusion and retroperitoneal oblique surgery for spinal fusion.
The workshop was attended by spinal surgeons from all over the country and residents of AFMC who were extremely benefitted by the rich experience of the stellar instructors for the workshop. Dr KV Menon, Head of Spine service, Bharati Hospital Pune was the course chairman along with Brig Shashivadhanan, Head of Neurosurgery service Command Hospital Pune, Dr Abhay Nene and Dr Ayush Sharma, renowned spine surgeons from Mumbai, Dr Mayur Kardile and Dr Mandar Borde from Pune.
The pre-workshop orientation programme was inaugurated by Brig Tony Jose, Commandant, Military Hospital Khadki, who welcomed the participants from various parts of the country and emphasized the benefit of cadaver based learning to refine the surgical skills for the young surgeons. Col Debasis Bandyopadhyay, Head of Department of Anatomy at AFMC introduced the workshop participants to the basics of abdominal anatomy.
The academic event, held under aegis of the prestigious Pune Orthopaedic Society (POS) was inaugurated by Dr Arjun Viegas, President POS alongwith Dr Yogesh Khandalkar, Secretary POS.
