Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) in Mumbai has implemented a groundbreaking IoT-Based Cold Storage Solution at MSD CGHS Koliwada. This innovative project marks a significant milestone in modernizing pharmaceutical storage and handling, particularly for temperature-sensitive medications. This state-of-the-art project was executed in collaboration with Codratech Private Limited, known for their expertise in advanced technological solutions.

Additional Director of CGHS Mumbai, Dr. Nirmal Mandal, emphasized the transformative impact of this initiative. “The IoT-based solution ensures that vital medications are stored under optimal conditions, which is critical for maintaining their efficacy and ensuring patient safety,” he remarked. “This project is not just a milestone for CGHS Mumbai but a beacon for the broader healthcare community,” Dr. Mandal added. He also mentioned that the project demonstrates what can be achieved when technology and tenacity come together in the service of public health.

“The new system has not only reduced our workload but also decreased medication spoilage and improved our compliance with health safety standards,” shared a CGHS pharmacist.

Key features of the project include:

  • This system aligns with stringent World Health Organization (WHO) standards for the storage of pharmaceutical products.
  • Continuous surveillance ensuring that all stored pharmaceuticals remain within the critical safe range of 2°C to 8°C.
  • Enhanced operational efficiency through a centralized monitoring dashboard which allows for immediate responses to any deviations.
  • High scalability and adaptability of the system, ensuring its applicability to other CGHS facilities across the region.
  • The project utilizes advanced Ice Lined Refrigerators (ILRs) integrated with Internet of Things (IoT) technology, allows for real-time monitoring and management of temperature and humidity levels.

Despite facing challenges such as technological integration and user adoption resistance, the project team has implemented comprehensive training programs and robust security protocols that have significantly improved user adoption rates and ensured data integrity. With the pilot’s success, CGHS is committed to broadening the implementation of this technology to ensure uniform pharmaceutical care across its facilities in Mumbai. This expansion will further standardize healthcare delivery and patient safety

Looking ahead, the project aims to integrate advanced analytics and expand sensor capabilities, paving the way for future technology-driven solutions in healthcare management.
