DIRECTORATE OF PLANNING & COORDINATION

  • The Directorate of Planning & Coordination was set up in 1964 with the primary objective of preparing overall plans for the production of defence equipment in the country.
  • The Directorate functions as an attached office of the Department of Defence Production.
  • The Directorate primarily deals with capital acquisition of various weapon systems and platforms of the armed forces of India viz, Air Force, Army, Navy and Coast Guard.

DEFENCE EXHIBITION ORGANISATION (DEO)

  • The main function of DEO is to organize and co-ordinate defence exhibitions in India and abroad.
  • DEO maintains a permanent Defence Exhibition at the Defence Pavilion, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
  • All Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUS), the Ordinance Factory Board (OFB), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Directorate General of Quality Assurance (DGQA) and Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA) have displayed their products, innovations and services in this Exhibition.

NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN DEFENCE SHIPBUILDING

  • National Institute for Research and Development in Defence Shipbuilding (NIRDESH) set up as an autonomous society under the aegis of the Ministry of Defence, Department of Defence Production.
  • R&D, design, technology development, industry interfacing, training and project management have been identified as the core areas guiding the roles of NIRDESH.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (DRDO)

  • India has a proud position among top four countries having multilevel strategic deterrence capabilities; top five countries with own Ballistic Missle Defence (BMD) programme; top six countries having developed a nuclear-powered Submarine (Arihant); top seven countries with indigenous Main Battle Tank (Arjun) & 4th plus generation Combat Aircraft (Tejas) and select few countries with own Electronic Warfare and rnulti-range Radar Programme.
  • All these and many more world class weapon systems are based on cutting edge technologies developed by DRDO (Defence Research & Development Organisation), the R&D wing of the Ministry of Defence.
  • DRDO came into existence in 1958 with the amalgamation of Technical Development Establishment (TDES) of Indian Army and Directorate of Technical Development & Production (DTD&P) with Defence Science Organization (DSO).
  • DS. Kothari, the eminent scientist and educationist was the first to head the Organization. DRDO is currently headed by Dr. Avinash Chander, Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri (SA to RM) and Secretary, Department of Defence R&D.
  • The Corporate Headquarters of DRDO is located at DRDO Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • The Centre for Personnel Talent Management (CEPTAM) is responsible for induction and training of personnel belonging to Technical, Administrative and Allied cadres of the DRDO.
  • DRDO carries out design and development of state-of-the-art weapon systems, platforms, sensors and allied equipment, and lead them to production through production agencies.
  • DRDO apprises the Defence Minister about emerging developments in Science and Technology and their influence on National Security.
  • DRDO also deals with certification of the design air worthiness of military aircraft, their equipment and stores.
