Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying to host Strategic Workshop for 21st Livestock Census

The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying is set to host a pivotal workshop aimed at strategizing and empowering the States and Union Territories for the upcoming 21st Livestock Census. This significant event will take place on June 25, 2024, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi where Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh will be the chief guest. The Ministers of State of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel & Shri George Kurian and Secretary, DAHD, Ms. Alka Upadhyaya will also be present. 

The primary objectives of the workshop are to equip State and Union Territory officers with the necessary tools, including a mobile app and software, to efficiently conduct the 21st Livestock Census. Participants will also be trained on data collation strategies to ensure the collection of high-quality data and will be familiarized with various registered breeds.

Since its inception in 1919, the Livestock Census has been a vital exercise conducted every five years, forming the backbone of policy formulation and the implementation of numerous programmes in the Animal Husbandry sector. This comprehensive door-to-door survey captures detailed data on domesticated animals and birds across the nation. The 21st Livestock Census, scheduled for September to December 2024, will incorporate mobile technology for data collection and transmission, enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of the process across all villages and urban wards in the country.

The workshop will commence with an inaugural ceremony, followed by detailed sessions on the Census methodology, training on the mobile application and software dashboard, and an open house discussion to address queries and concerns from participants.

The event will also feature the Union Ministers of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel and Shri George Kurian. Key attendees include Ms. Alka Upadhyay, Secretary, DAHD, senior officers of DAHD, Principal Secretaries/Secretaries from States and Union Territories, members of the Technical Committee for the 21st Livestock Census, and the Registrar General of India.

The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying invites all stakeholders to participate in this crucial workshop to ensure the successful implementation of the 21st Livestock Census.
