The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized Foreign Currency of INR Value Rs. 1.42 Crores at CSI Airport, Mumbai. The DRI has arrested a pax attempting to smuggle foreign currency out of India.
Based on pin pointed Intelligence, officers of DRI Mumbai Zonal Unit intercepted a pax Sh. Karan Singh who had arrived at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai from Jodhpur by Indigo Flight No. 6E 5362 and was to board Dubai Flight 6E 61 on 03.12.2021.
During the examination of the baggage of the pax, white coloured envelopes were found concealing inside the garments. On opening the envelopes, foreign currencies of various denominations were found. The details of the recovered foreign currencies are as following:-
Thus a total of 1,32,000/- USD, 42,150/- EURO, 29,500/- Saudi Arabian Rial & 6,00,000/- Japanese Yen totally valued at Rs.1,42,75,018/- was seized under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962.
Shri Karan Singh was arrested on 04.12.2021. He was produced before the Hon’ble CMM, Esplande and was remanded to judicial custody.
During the investigation, it was revealed that one Lekhraj Mewara has handed over the said baggage to Karan Singh. Lekhraj was subsequently arrested on .05.12.2021 and was also sent to judicial custody by the Hon’ble CMM Court.
This is the second case of attempted smuggling of foreign currency smuggling at CSI Airport, Mumbai within a span of a week which has been foiled by timely action by officers of DRI. Earlier DRI had arrested 4 persons in connection to seizure of 5 Lakhs USD on 26.11.2021 at CSI Airport, Mumbai.
