As part of celebrations of the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) organized a captivating Geo-heritage camp at Ajanta today. This event is part of a series of programs being conducted nationwide to raise awareness among school students about the rich heritage sites in their surroundings.
Addressing the gathering, Union Minister of state for Railways, Coal and Mines, Raosaheb Patil Danve, emphasized the crucial role of the youth in achieving the vision of a developed India by 2047, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Minister Danve highlighted the significance of imparting knowledge about heritage sites to students, as it will stay with them throughout their lives. He urged teachers to arrange educational trips to such sites, enabling students to experience and appreciate the magnificence of India’s cultural heritage firsthand.
Emphasizing the role of connectivity in development, Minister Danve acknowledged the ongoing railway development work in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, and the surrounding areas.
As part of the camp, various quizzes were organized to test students’ knowledge about geo-heritage sites. Prizes were awarded to the deserving participants. The event was graced by the presence of State Agriculture Minister Abdul Sattar, Economic Adviser to the Ministry of Mines Shakeel Alam, and officials from the Geological Survey of India.
Geo-Heritage sites in Maharashtra
Maharashtra, a state renowned for its rich geological heritage, is home to six notable geo-heritage sites. These include the Lonar lake in Buldhana district, which was formed by a meteorite impact and is a unique natural wonder. The Ajanta and Ellora Caves, famous for their exquisite ancient paintings and sculptures, are also among the recognized sites. Additionally, the state boasts the Tablelands at Mahabaleshwar and Pachgani, the Gigantic potholes (Kund) at Nighoj on the Kukdi River in Parner taluka, and the Wadadham Fossil Park in Sironcha taluka of Gadchiroli district, known for its significant dinosaur remains.
