Implement traditional practices of wet waste recycling in daily life: Sulakshana Sawant

Panaji, 22 April, 2022

Field Outreach Bureau Goa (FOB), under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, in association with Goa Livelihoods Forum and Goa State Rural Livelihood Mission, conducted a workshop on “Wealth from Waste” for women self help groups as part of World Earth Day celebrations at Ravindra Bhavan, Sankhali, on Friday, April 22, 2022.

Smt Sulakshana Sawant, President, the Goa State Women SHG Association, inaugurated the event.  Stressing upon conservation of water, Smt. Sawant said that it was our responsibility to use water carefully and not waste it. She also explained the importance of waste management and how waste segregation could help in recycling and saving the Earth.

“Traditionally, our mothers were doing it — using wet waste to grow plants. However, the good practices are forgotten now. We have to revive those practices and implement that in our lives,” she said. Smt. Sawant also motivated the women farmers to grow nutritional plants at home through which they can take care of the nutritional requirement of the entire family.

Leading a workshop on “Wealth from Waste,” Shri Balaji Kendre, Vice President of Feedback Foundation, said that the concept that waste is to be thrown away should be changed to bring in a behavioral change in the society. “Waste is a product that can be used to create wealth. Any product that you throw away such as plastic bottles or paper or plastic carry bags can create income for you if you segregate and sell that to recycling units,” he said.
You can earn wealth if you are capable to resolve a problem or by suggesting remedies to the problem. Waste is a problem and you should be able to resolve that problem in your own way, he said.
As part of the program, Ram Magic Drama Group performed magic programs to create awareness about earth conservation.

Earlier, the FOB had conducted competitions on Nutri Gardens for the SHGs in Bicholim taluka. A panel led by Shri Nelson Figueiredo, former Director, Agriculture Department, Government of Goa, visited the Nutri Gardens on Thursday. The winners of the competition were awarded prizes at the program.
Earth Day 2022 was observed across the planet on Friday April 22, 2022, keeping up the theme, “Invest in Our Planet”.
