Leung Chun-ying won the election to be Hong Kong’s next chief executive.
Leung, 57, won 689 votes from an election panel comprising businessmen, lawmakers and academics, or about 61% of the total.
Henry Tang, the front-runner until scandals drove down his popularity in opinion polls, garnered 285 votes.
Leung, who will begin his five-year term on 1 July, will need to address public anger over rising living cost spawned by an influx of money from mainland China and eight years of rising property prices that have made Hong Kong the world’s most expensive place to buy a home.
