MPEDA Regional Division, Mumbai and NETFISH celebrated Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav of India at Sassoon Dock Fishing Harbour, Mumbai

As a part of “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” a celebration to commemorate 75 years of Independence, the Department of Commerce, Govt. of India organised “Vanijya Saptah” from 20th September to 26th September, 2021 with a focus on economic growth, especially promotion of exports from India. In this regard, Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), Regional Division, Mumbai in association with NETFISH and Seafood Exporters Association of India organized various programmes at Sassoon Dock fishing harbour, Mumbai and FSI Net mending hall on 26th September 2021. 

At the Sassoon dock fishing harbour, A Voyage of fifteen fishing vessels was arranged wherein fishing vessels decorated with Indian flags, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav flags, banner and tricolour decorative items ventured into the sea. The Flagging off of the vessels was done by Dr. Atul Patne, Commissioner of Fisheries, Govt. of Maharashtra who graced the occasion as a chief guest. Distribution of T-Shirts, Caps, Masks, Sanitiser kits and badges to the fishers was arranged.

Awareness programme on the theme “Responsible fishing for sustainable future” was organized at Net Mending Hall of Fishery Survey of India, Mumbai Base. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Rajendra Jadhav, Joint commissioner of Fisheries, Govt. of Maharashtra by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Mr. Ajay Nakhawa from CMFRI, Mumbai and Dr. Girija Saurabh Behere from NETFISH-MPEDA delivered lectures on Juvenile fishing and Responsible fishing for sustainable future respectively. A cultural event with the traditional dance by the fishermen from Sassoon dock fishing harbour was also organised. 

Dr. L. N. Murthy, Principal Scientist from CIFT, Mumbai, Dr. Sreenath P. G., Deputy Director, MPEDA RD, Mumbai, Mr. Subray Pavar, Asst. Director, MPEDA, Mumbai, Mr. Sanjay Wategaonkar, Asst. Commissioner of Fisheries, Govt. of Maharashtra, Mr. Shirke, MFDC, Mr. Ajay Nakhawa, Scientist from CMFRI, Mumbai, Mr. Ashok Kadam, Fisheries Scientist from FSI, Mr. Pavan Bharti, PRO, Mumbai Port Trust and other officials/ members from various departments like Mumbai port trust, Mumbai Police, State Department of Fisheries, Indian Navy, Fisheries Co-Operative Societies and fisheries association were present during awareness programme and the flagging off ceremony of fishing vessels. Both the events received overwhelming response from the fishermen, fishing boat owners, seafood auctioneers, Seafood Exporters, Various Government organisations etc.
