Nuclear Recycle Board of India

The Nuclear Recycle Board was formed with the approval of the Cabinet during September 2009.

Nuclear Recycle Board functions as an entity within Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) for execution of projects and operation and maintenance of nuclear recycle facilities in the back end of Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) fuel cycle.

Nuclear Recycle Board (NRB) was setup to carry out an expansion programme for reprocessing of spent fuel from nuclear power reactors and develop a nuclear waste management in the country.

The Board operates under the purview of BARC Safety Council.

Under the aegis of the NRB, several integrated reprocessing and waste management plants of large capacity will be set up to meet the demand of Plutonium fuel for the fast breeder reactors.

With the commencement of reprocessing at Kalpakkam Reprocessing Plant (KARP) in Tamil Nadu recently and continued operation of reprocessing plants at Arapur and Trombay (BARC), India’s rate of production of fuel material for fast breeder reactor is substantially enhanced.

The entire off-grade uranium stored in waste tank farm has already been processed.
