Following a steady downward slope, India’s Active Caseload down to 1.41 Lakh; Less than 5,000 Active Cases in 33 States/UTs;No Death in the last 24 hours in 19 States/UTs,More than 66 lakh beneficiaries vaccinated against COVID19
India has been consistently following a declining slope of active cases. The country’s active caseload has dropped to 1.41 lakh (1,41,511) today. The present active cases now consist of just 1.30% of India’s Total Positive Cases.Following the national cue, 33 States & UTs have reported less than 5000 active cases in the last 24 hours. Daman & Diu & Dadra & Nagar Haveli currently have 0 active cases.11,067 new daily cases have been recorded in the last 24 hours whereas 13,087 patients have recovered and discharged in the last 24 hours. It has led to a net decline of 2,114 cases from the total Active caseload.Two States – Kerala and Maharashtra- account for 71% of the total Active Cases of the country.Nineteen States/UTs have not reported any death in the last 24 hours. India’s cumulative recoveries stand at 1,05,61,608 today. The Recovery Rate is 97.27%.As on 10thFebruary, 2021, till 8 AM, more than 66 lakh (66,11,561) beneficiaries have received vaccination under the countrywide COVID19 vaccination exercise.The total cumulative vaccination coverage of 66,11,561 includes 56,10,134 healthcare workers and 10,01,427 frontline workers. 1,34,746 sessions have been conducted so far.The final figures for the vaccination coverage for Day 25 (9th Feb 2021) of the country wide exercise include 3,52,553 beneficiaries (HCWs – 1,28,032 and FLWs- 2,24,521) across 7,990 sessions.The number of beneficiaries being vaccinated every day is following a consistent upward slope.81.68% of the new recovered cases are observed to be concentrated in 6 States.Kerala has reported the maximum number of single day recoveries with 6,475 newly recovered cases. 2,554 people recovered in Maharashtra in the past 24 hours followed by 513 in Karnataka.83.31% of the daily new cases are from 6 States.Kerala reports the highest daily new cases at 5,214. 94 fatalities have been recorded in the last 24 hours.Six States account for 80.85%of the daily deaths. Maharashtra saw the maximum casualties (35). Kerala follows with 19 daily deaths and Punjab has reported 8 casualties.

Union Health Secretary Reviews Status and Progress of COVID Vaccination with States/UTs, States/UTs urged to exponentially increase the pace of vaccination, Beneficiaries of Inaugural Vaccination Day to start getting Second Dose on 13th Feb 2021

Shri Rajesh Bhushan, Union Health Secretary reviewed the status and progress of COVID vaccination with Health Secretaries and NHM MDs of States and UTs, through video conference (VC) on Saturday. One of the largest such exercise globally, the countrywide COVID19 vaccination programme was launched three weeks back on 16th January 2021 by Hon. Prime Minister. At the outset, the Union Health Secretary appreciated the creditworthy performance of all States and UTs on COVID19 vaccination. Elaborating on the global landmarks crossed by India, he underlined that India is the fastest country to reach the 5 million mark in COVID19 vaccination in just 21 days. Several other countries which have had a head start, some as much as 60 days, have taken a longer time to reach this target. Union Health Secretary urged the States and UTs to exponentially increase the pace of vaccination. States/UTs asked to improve the momentum and accelerate the coverage as the country moves forward with the COVID vaccination drive.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare distributed woolen blankets, masks and soaps among the destitute persons staying in VishramSadan at AIIMS, New Delhi on 8th February, 2021. Shri R. K. Jain, Secretary General, Red Cross Society, Prof. R. Guleria, Director, AIIMS and other senior officials of AIIMS were also present on the occasion.Talking about the challenge posed by COVID19, the Union Minister highlighted that the vaccine for the prevention of COVID19 has been approved and the Government of India have already started the largest vaccination drive in the world. He also stated that, the fact that the vaccine is developed indigenously, “shows the great capacity our country has and is a big boost to the Prime Minister’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative”.In appreciation of the IRCS’s active role in reducing the impact of COVID-19, Dr Harsh Vardhan stated, “it gives me a sense of pride that IRCS is playing an important role in the fight against COVID-19.

PM speaks to His Excellency Matemela Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had a telephone conversation on Thursday with His Excellency Matemela Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa. The two leaders discussed the continuing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and in this context the vaccination campaigns being undertaken in their respective countries. Prime Minister reiterated to the South African President that India’s considerable productive capacity for pharmaceuticals and vaccines would continue to serve the needs of all countries, including those in Africa. The two leaders also discussed possibilities of collaboration between India and South Africa in various international fora, to facilitate access and affordability of vaccines and medicines. The leaders agreed that officials of both countries would remain in touch over the coming days to exchange experiences and explore potential for collaborative efforts against the pandemic.

The Covid-19 pandemic has taught the world that one cannot be safe if others are at risk, said the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind. He was addressing the 23rd Annual Convocation of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka in Bengaluru on February 7, 2021. The President said that the first major pandemic in over a century has taught us to be better prepared for unforeseen public health crises. Though Covid-19 seems to be one-of-a-kind health-crisis that happens rarely, a section of scientists has warned us to be prepared for similar challenges ahead. He expressed hope that the world has learnt the right lessons. He stated that in the post-Covid phase, the world would have to pay more attention to public healthcare.Addressing the graduating students, the President said that their entry into this noble profession opens up for them, unforeseen and unprecedented opportunities to serve humanity.

Impact of Covid-19 on Integrated Child Development Services

During COVID-19, functioning of Anganwadi Centres were permitted as per guidelines issued by Government from time to time. Accordingly, the distribution of food items and nutrition support were provided by Anganwadi Workers (AWWs) once in 15 days at the doorstep of beneficiaries, e.g., children, women and lactating mothers. Anganwadi Workers and Helpers were engaged in COVID-19 awareness drive and specifically assigned responsibilities to generate awareness about proper sanitation and health education to children and their parents, conduct of community surveillance, etc.

Launch of Covid Vaccine

The COVID-19 vaccination has been rolled out in the country from 16th January 2021 in a phased manner starting with prioritised groups of Health Care Workers and Front Line Workers. The roll-out of COVID-19 vaccine is being done simultaneously across all States and UTs.The Government has sufficient doses of COVID-19 vaccine available for the on-going phase of COVID-19 vaccination throughout the country.The existing cold storage facilities under Universal Immunization Programme have been further strengthened and are being used for storing COVID-19 vaccine. The available storage space is sufficient to store COVID-19 vaccines already supplied to States/UTs.

Steps taken to provide online education amidst COVID-19 pandemic

The Government has taken various steps to provide online education amidst COVID-19 pandemic. These include PRAGYATA Guidelines on Digital Education, Internet access under BHARAT NET scheme, etc PRAGYATA Guidelines on Digital Education:Keeping in view the availability of digital infrastructure, guideline briefs on various modes of digital education including online mode that depends more on availability of internet, partially online mode that utilizes the blended approach of digital technology and other offline activities, partial and offline mode that utilizes television and radio as a major medium of instruction of education. I&B Minister Prakash Javadekar launches state wide awareness campaign on COVID19 vaccination and Aatmanirbhar Bharat in Pune

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shri Prakash Javadekaron Sunday flagged off a mobile exhibition awareness campaign on covid vaccination and Aatmnirbhar Bharat in Pune. Under this campaign 16 specially fabricated vans will travel across 36 districts of Maharashtra to spread awareness among people. The campaign has been designed and implemented by the Regional Outreach Bureau, Pune of Ministry of I&B in collaboration with the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the IEC Division of the Maharashtra Health Department. The vans will also display messages through LED screens and these vans will be live tracked through GPS. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Javadekar said “Whole world is fighting Corona. However even with population of 130 crore India has managed to keep its losses lesser than Latin America, Europe or America. The Minister further said that with Covid Vaccination, having begun, we have entered the new phase of communication. “India’s vaccine roll out has begun. Ever since the launch of COVID vaccination programme, more than 50 lakh health and frontline workers have been vaccinated in the country. The campaign intends to take message of vaccination plan and COVID appropriate behaviour to the last mile in Maharashtra. The cultural artistes of Song & Drama Division will convey messages through folk performances popular in respective regions of Maharashtra.

Study shows significant reduction of heavy metal pollution during COVID-19 pandemicin the Ganga water

Efforts to minimize industrial wastewater can substantially reduce heavy metal pollution in the Ganga water in a short time span of a few months, a study carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic has shown. The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown provided a team of scientists from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur a rare opportunity to quantify the impact of restricted anthropogenic activities on the water chemistry resilience of large rivers. They analyzed the daily geochemical record of the Ganga River and showed that reduced industrial discharge during 51 days of mandated nationwide lockdown decreased the dissolved heavy metal concentrations by a minimum of 50%. In contrast, inputs from agricultural runoff and domestic sewage like nitrate and phosphate remained almost the same as these sources were not impacted by the nationwide confinement.

As per the Estimates of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the First Quarter (Q1) of 2020-21 released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics & Program Implementation (MoSPI), the real GDP in India contracted by 23.9 per cent during the first quarter of 2020-21 (as against 5.2 per cent growth in Q1 of 2019-20). India’s GDP growth rose to (-) 7.5 percent YoY in Q2 (as against 4.4 per cent growth in Q2 of 2019-20), a sharp rebound from the pandemic induced decline in Q1.

Security Measures for Asha Workers during COVID-19

Under the National Health Mission, ASHAs are envisaged to be community health volunteer and are entitled only to task/activity based incentives. In FY 2018-19 the Union Cabinet revised the amount of incentive for ASHAs from Rs 1000 to 2000 per month. In addition to routine and recurring incentives, many States/UTs have also introduced fixed monthly honorarium for ASHAs from their respective States/UTs budget. The Government of India has been taking various measures to empower and secure the working of ASHAs from time to time. Under the recently launched Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package, Insurance Scheme has been introduced for all health workers, including ASHAs. This insurance scheme provides an insurance cover of Rs. 50 Lakh in case of loss of life on account of COVID related duty.States/UTs have been asked to ensure provision of safety tools like masks and sanitizers for ASHAs.

  • Assam: In Assam, total COVID-19 cases rise to 2,17,256 with 27 new cases on Tuesday, total discharged patients 2,14,490 and 1086 total death. Active cases 333.
  • Nagaland: In Nagaland, 06 new COVID-19 cases detected on Tuesday. Total cases rise to 12116.
  • Kerala: Indian Council of Medical Research has urged Kerala to be more vigilant in defence activities of Covid-19. ICMR’s stern directive comes after half of Covid cases reported in the country are from Kerala. Of the 13,088 cases reported in the country yesterday, 6475 were from Kerala. There are currently 1,41,511 patients under treatment in the country. Of these, 64,390 are from Kerala. The central team had earlier assessed that the decrease in tests was the reason for the sharp rise in Covid transmission in Kerala. Following this, the central team directed the state to increase the number of tests and sought an explanation for the increase in test positivity. Meanwhile, the Covshield vaccine drive for health workers in the state will come to an end in two days. A total of 3.26 lakh health workers have taken vaccine so far out of the over 5 lakh registered.
  •                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Tamil Nadu: A total of 89 doctors have died due to COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu, according to data published by the Indian Medical Association. Tamil Nadu Health Department officials said that the government would launch COVID-19 vaccination for senior citizens after Centre gives its permission.State reported 469 cases on Tuesday. Seroprevalence data for Tamil Nadu indicates that 31.6% has contracted COVID-19 at some point in time. 1,74,749 persons have got shots so far.
  • Karnataka: As on date, Karnataka recorded 9,43,212 total cases, 12,241 deaths, 5785 Active cases and 9,25,167 discharges. In a major decision Karnataka state government lifted ban on religious festivals, jatra and other celebrations. Religious Endowment department issued order and revoked March 20,2020 order which banned all types of religious festivities because of COVID-19. 4.41 lakh beneficiaries vaccinated.
  • Andhra Pradesh:  Polling for the first phase of panchayat elections passed off peacefully on Tuesday. The first phase of polling for 2,723 panchayats in Andhra Pradesh ended peacefully with 81.78 per cent turnout. Krishna district recorded the highest percentage of 85.06, according to the State Election Commission.  The polls will be conducted till February 21 in another three phases.  Elections were held with all necessary precautions taken as per COVID-19 protocol amid tight security and PPE kits were provided to voters infected by the virus. The State government constituted a high-level committee to monitor the implementation of the recommendations made by the Multi-disciplinary Committee on the mystery illness accompanied by sudden convulsions in Eluru Municipal Corporation limits of West Godavari district. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh witnessed 70 COVID-19 cases and no deaths in the last 24 hours ending Tuesday morning. The new cases took the tally to 8,88,555. The toll remains at 7,160 and the number of recoveries increased to 8,80,478 with 115 new recoveries in the past day. The recovery rate was 99.09 per cent. Less than 100 new cases a day were reported for the past week.
  • Telangana: Covid vaccination programme for frontline warriors like Police, Revenue, Municipal, Panchayat Raj and personnel of the Central Para Military Forces started on 6th of this month in the state. State DGP Shri Mahender Reddy took the vaccine on the first day. The Director of State Public Health Dr.G.Sreenivasa Rao and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Southern Zone IG Shri Mahesh Ladda were also vaccinated on 8th of this month. The cumulative number of total vaccine beneficiaries (till yesterday evening) including govt, private health workers and other frontline warriors stands at 2,43,483. The vaccination for the frontline workers will continue till 12 of this month. From 13th onwards second dose will be administered to the health staff who have already taken the first dose.  The total number of Covid cases reported in the state stands at 2,95,988 and the total number of fatalities at 1613.  As many as 2,92,578 patients (98.84 percent) have recovered. Total number of active cases is 1,797 out of which 729 are in Home/Institutional isolation. A Sero survey conducted by the ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad in the month of December last in the districts of JANGAON, NALGONDA and KAMAREDDY in the state revealed that the anti-bodies against Covid were found in 24 percent of the people indicating that these people had silent and prior exposure to SARS-CoV-2.
  • Maharashtra: 2,515 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Maharashtra on Tuesday. There are 34,640 active cases and 19,61,525 COVID-19 patients have been discharged after full recovery in the state as per the latest report.35 COVID-19 deaths were also reported in the state on Tuesday. Recovery rate in the state is 95.74%, while the Case fatality rate is the state is 2.51%. More than 5 lakh health workers and frontline workers have been vaccinated against Coronavirus in the state till Tuesday. State Health Minister Rajesh Tope said, in the third phase, people above the age of 50 years and those under 50 with co-morbidities will be vaccinated. Currently, there are 652 Vaccination Centres in the state. About 40,000 to 45,000 health workers are being vaccinated every day in the state. So far, 10 lakh 54 thousand health workers have been registered on the CoWin portal, out of which 4,68,293 health workers have been vaccinated. While 5,47,000 frontline workers have been registered out of which 41,453 have been vaccinated till Tuesday.
  • Gujarat: 234 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in Gujarat on Tuesday. Meanwhile, 2,57,473  cases  have been recovered from the disease, out of which 353 patients have recovered on Tuesday. At present, total active cases in the state are 2040. Maximum 70 new cases have been reported from Vadodara, while Ahmedabad recorded 43 new cases. The recovery rate has reached 97.56 percent in the state. More than 56,000 persons have been vaccinated for COVID-19 on Tuesday through 974 vaccination centres across the state.  Total 6 lakh 60 thousand 516 persons have received vaccine against COVID-19 in the state till Tuesday.
  • Madhya Pradesh: The statereported 167 new COVID-19 cases, 219 recoveries and 2 deaths on Tuesday. With this, the total cases have gone up to 2,56,758 and total recoveries to 2,50,946 while the death toll stands at 3825. There are 1987 active cases at present. Maximum cases were reported from Bhopal(44), Indore(33 ) and Jabalpur (11) on Tuesday.
  • Chattisgarh: The state reported 206 new COVID-19 cases, 22 recoveries and 1 death on Tuesday. With this, the total cases have gone up to 3,07,996 and total recoveries to 3,00,078, while the death toll stands at 3746. There are 4172 active cases at present. Maximum cases were reported from Raipur(59), Durg(29 ) and Raigarh (25) on Tuesday.
  • Rajasthan: The state reported 90 new COVID-19 cases as on Tuesday. With this, the total cases have gone up to 3,18,384 and total recoveries to 3,14,175 while the death toll stands at 2774. Total samples collected is 59,92,501 as on Tuesday
  • Goa – 59 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in Goa on Tuesday. There are 692 active cases and 52,530 COVID-19 patients have been discharged after full recovery in the state till Tuesday. The recovery rate of the state is 97.28%
