Blue Water Sailing Expedition to commemorate 75 years of Independence was organised by The Corps of Engineers. The expedition which will be covering a distance of 570 nautical miles from HBTC Marve to INS Mandovi Goa and back will mark and resonate the tri-services integration and encourage adventure activity in the Armed Forces. 12 Young and Dynamic Army Officers from College of Military Engineering, after undergoing rigorous training and selection are participating in the expedition.
The expedition will sail with two Seabird class boats: ‘Oshin’ led by Capt Vivek Kumar Singh and ‘Jalashva’ led by Capt Rohit Singh Thakur. Seabird Class sailboat was designed in 1922 by Alfred Mylne, a famous Scottish yacht designer. It consists of a 26 feet long wooden mast, 6.5 feet beam and a sail area of 260 square feet.
The officers underwent a two weeks of Blue Water Sailing course at Army Adventure Nodal Centre, HBTC Marve. This course covers topics such as weather forecasting, offshore navigation, safety at sea, heavy weather tactics, sail repair, boat maintenance, provisioning, and communication systems. After completion of the Course, the team casted off on 19 Apr 23 for their voyage towards INS Mandovi to solemnize ‘Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’. The sailing expedition was flagged off by Maj Gen Vinayak Saini, SM, Officiating Commandant, College of Military Engineering. The General officer motivated the young officers and conveyed his best wishes for the expedition.
