Bharti Enterprises Founder and Chairman Sunil Mittal has been elected as GSMA Chairman for a two-year period from January 2017 through December 2018.
GSMA Chairman Jon Fredrik Baksaas will step down from the Board at the end of 2016, after holding this position for the past three years. Baksaas was elected as a member of the GSMA Board in 2008.
The GSM Association was formed in 1995 on the foundation of the Groupe Spécial Mobile, a referendum signed on September 7, 1987. The association organizes the largest annual event in the mobile industry, the GSMA Mobile World Congress, in addition to some smaller events, such as the GSMA Mobile World Congress Shanghai and the GSMA Mobile 360 Series.
