VOTER TURNOUT IN 2014 GENERAL ELECTIONS
- In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Commission catered to an electorate of 834 million, larger that the total population of many continents.
- The Turnout for LS 2014 stands at a record high of 4% against 58.19% in 2009. Highest turnout was recorded earlier in 1984 at 64.01%.
- Electorate in LS 2014 is 83.41 crore (including service electors) as against 71.69 crore in 2009.
- 38 crore voters cast their vote in LS 2014, 41.73 crore votes were cast in LS 2009. This is an increase of voters by 3271% over voters in 2009.
- Female turnout (a major SVEEP objective) stands at 63% in current LS against 55.82% in 2009. (Male turnout at 67.09% in 2014 and 60.24% in 2009).
- The gender gap now stands reduced at 46 %age points against more than 4 %age points in 2009.
