The Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER) is a premier R&D institution under the administrative control of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. SAMEER specializes in the research, development and commercialization of microwave electronics, electromagnetic technology and related areas. Established in 1984 in Mumbai, SAMEER has its origin in 1977, as a dedicated laboratory in the esteemed Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) called the “Special Microwave Products Unit” (SMPU). Over the years, SAMEER has expanded its spectrum of activities by establishing centers in Chennai, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, and Guwahati. SAMEER is gently but purposefully contributing to nation building by undertaking challenging activities spanning across a mix of sectors, including strategic, societal, and next-gen technologies, and also handholding and developing industry in niche applications of RF/Microwave technologies.

SAMEER operates multiple centers across India, each specializing in different core research areas. The Mumbai center focuses on optoelectronics, medical electronics, radar instrumentation, and RF & microwave systems. The Kolkata center specializes in phase array antennas, electromagnetics, and RF/milli-meter wave components. The Guwahati center is building indigenous capacity for the design and fabrication of high power microwave tubes and component technology. The Chennai center’s core strength is in product design and consultancy in electromagnetics, antennas, EMI/EMC, communications, and thermal management. The Visakhapatnam center is one-of-its kind facility in the country dedicated to electromagnetic environmental effects (E3) research and testing.

SAMEER has played a crucial role in developing indigenous 5G solutions, researching next-generation 6G technologies, and advancing Indian defense indigenization. The Mumbai center is pioneering health technology with India’s first fully indigenous MRI system. SAMEER has also significantly contributed to agriculture by developing technologies like the Brix meter for the sugar industry and smart warehouses for the Food Corporation of India. Other key research areas include mm-Wave technologies, MMIC design and packaging, photonics and quantum communication, medical diagnostics, atmospheric radars, microwave heating and drying, radar-based instrumentation, secured communication technologies, and EMP testing facilities.

On Saturday, August 10, 2024, in a milestone step in R&D for Agriculture and Industrial Food Processing Sector, in the presence of Secretary, MeitY, Shri S. Krishnan and Director General of SAMEER Dr. P. Hanumantha Rao, a Transfer of Technology agreement with private companies will be signed in Mumbai, for Technology Transfer to support sugarcane farmers (Ganna Kisan) and associated sugar production industry in India. The Microwave-Based Brix Measurement System, designed and developed by SAMEER, offers a rapid, non-destructive, and accurate method for measuring sugar content (Brix) in sugarcane juice. This cutting-edge technology eliminates the need for manual sampling, reducing production downtime and increasing overall efficiency.
