Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (ESSO-INCOIS) conducted a mock drill on tsunami warnings named as ‘IOWave16′.
INCOIS organised the exercise along with the UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.
The Tsunami Warning Centre, which serves 27 countries in the Indian Ocean, forecasts high wave alerts for coastal residents and seafarers, coral bleaching alerts for environmental monitoring among other services.
Most of the coastal States/UTs are participating in IOWave16 Tsunami mock drill.
Thirty-three coastal districts are participating to take up community level evacuations in about 350 villages and around 40,000 people are to be evacuated during the drill.
The centre is operational since October 2007 and is capable of detecting tsunamigenic earthquakes occurring in the whole of Indian Ocean region as well as in the global oceans within 10 minutes of their occurrence.
