Union Ministry of Textiles organizes week-long Exhibition Cum Sales of Handicrafts in Ponda

A week-long exhibition cum sales event was organized by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India at Ponda, Goa from 29th October to 4th November 2023.

The event was held under the Craft Demonstration Cum Awareness Programmes Scheme. It was organized by the Handicrafts Service Centre, Panaji with the aim to support local artisans and increase awareness about the richness of indigenous handicrafts of India.

The exhibition cum sale witnessed enthusiastic participation from 25 local artisans who showcased a wide range of handicraft products including hand embroidery, crochet lace, jute products, terracotta items, jewelry, Kunbi handloom saris etc. The week-long event received a good response from locals as well as tourists. The average daily sale of the participants was recorded at approximately Rs 8,000.

The valedictory function of the event was held on the evening of 4th November 2023 which included cultural programmes and distribution of certificates to the artisans. The programme was graced by several distinguished guests including Dr Gowri Shirodkar, Chairperson of Cluster Ponda, Smt Sangeeta Balkier, VIVO Chairperson Shiroda, and Smt Rajeshwari K M, Assistant Director, Handicrafts Service Centre, Panaji.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Shirodkar lauded the efforts taken by the Office of DC (Handicrafts) to provide a platform to local artisans to showcase their talent and boost sales. She said such initiatives play an important role in preserving the legacy of Indian handicrafts.

The week-long event fulfilled its objective of providing exposure and livelihood support to local artisans. The Office of DC (Handicrafts) plans to organize many more such exhibitions across the country under the Mini Exhibition Cum Sales scheme in future.
