Vartalap is a medium to bridge the gap between government and media in order to reach out to the masses, said joint Director PIB Mahesh Iyengar while attending the Media Workshop “Vartalap” organized by Press Information Bureau. (PIB) Mumbai at Sangli on Tuesday.
Resident District collector of Sangli Smt Jyoti Patil lauded the program for making available the platform for interaction between research institutes and mofussil media during her inaugural address.

Addressing the gathering Shri Iyengar said that things have changed now due to the advent of social media and role of Government media has become all the more crucial in the light of rise in fake and sensational news. “A new trend of fake news has assumed serious proportions and the government can be a good partner in busting the fake news”, he said while flagging the importance of vigilance to protect the masses from fake news and myths.
Later in the day, an engaging interactive session was held by senior scientist of the department of Atomic energy Dr. B B Mishra in which he explored the achievements of the department of atomic energy in helping the farmers by bringing out innovative technology for seed development, food irradiation preservation and waste management. Lead Bank Manager for Sangli Shri Vishwas Vetal gave a presentation about the role of banking in agricultural finance.
Thereafter researcher from Regional Central Integrated Pest Management Centre Shri Amit Jadhav gave presentation about dangers of overuse of pesticides and management of pest through ecologically sensitive techniques. Jadhav also informed the participants about NPSS App which can help in identifying the pest and in reporting about its occurrence to government authorities.
Penultimate session about PIB’s activities and role was jointly taken by Shri Mahesh Iyengar and Mahesh Chopade.
In the concluding session Shri Sandip Khude of Farmers Produce Organisation shared his experience of Government of India’s financial assistance.
A comprehensive feedback was also collected from journalists with inputs and suggestions after Vartalap. The Media Workshop has seen an active participation of nearly 80 journalists from Sangli
