NATIONAL MISSION FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE (NMSA)

  • NMSA is one of the eight missions outlined under National Action Plan on Climate Change.
  • It aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture through 17 deliverables focusing on ten key dimensions of Indian agriculture.
  • NMSA as a restructured Mission for 12th Plan has been conceptualized by subsuming:
  • Rainfed Area Development Programme (RADP),
  • National Mission on Micro Irrigation (NMMI),
  • National Project on Organic Farming (N POF),
  • National Project on Management of Soil Health & Fertility (NPMSH&F)
  • Soil and Land Use Survey of India.
  • NMSA will accord special focus for development of rainfed areas, resource conservation, water use efficiency and soil health management.
  • NMSA will also replicate the learning of the National Initiatives of Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) being implemented by ICAR in selected blocks on pilot basis.
  • Programme Components:
  1. Rainfed Area Development (RAD)
  2. On Farm Water Management (OFWM)
  3. Soil Health Management (SHM)
  • To ensure agriculture growth in the rainfed areas, govt. has launched a new scheme “Rainfed Area Development Programme (RADP)” in the year 2011-12 as a sub—scheme under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY). It aims at improving quality of life of farmer by offering a complete package of activities to maximize farm returns in rainfed areas.
  • RADI’ focuses on Integrated Farming System (IFS) by integrating location specific cropping system with livestock, fisheries and other livelihood support activities for enhancing productivity and minimizing risks associated with climatic variability.
