GREYWATER MANAGEMENT IN THE COUNTRY

azadi ka amrit mahotsav

Government has launched Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) [SBM(G)] Phase-II, a Centrally Sponsored Scheme, w.e.f. 2020-21 with the objectives to sustain the Open Defecation Free (ODF) status and to make Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) arrangements in all the villages by 2024-25 i.e. to convert the villages from ODF to ODF Plus.

Greywater Management (GWM) is one of the integral components of SBM(G) Phase-II. The Mission prioritizes the management of greywater preferably by simple techniques and on site i.e., near the source itself, using sustainable and economical technologies, such as soak-pit, leach-pit, magic-pit or kitchen garden. However, where space is not available near household, community level or village level GWM, such as Waste Stabilization Ponds (WSP)/ Constructed Wetlands/Decentralised Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS), Phytorid etc. are preferred.

Under SBM(G) Phase-II, financial assistance at the rate of up to Rs.280 per capita is available for villages with up to 5000 population and up to Rs. 660 per capita is available for villages with more than 5000 populations for GWM.

To expedite and promote the implementation of GWM by various measures and creation of assets, Sujlam Campaigns were launched in three versions (Sujlam 1.0, Sujlam 2.0 and Sujlam 3.0) during the period from 2021 to 2023. An estimated 5.1 million soak pits were reported constructed by the States/UTs under the three campaigns.

As per data reported by the States/UTs on the online Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) of SBM(G), as on 26.7.2023, 3,13,800 villages in the country are having arrangement for GWM.

Under SBM(G) Phase-II, funds are released to the States/UTs for all the components in a consolidated manner. The States/UTs can utilize the funds for all or any of the components as per their plan and priority. State/UT-wise details of Central share funds allocated, funds drawn and utilization reported thereof is given at Annexure-1.

District-wise number of villages covered with GWM in Uttar Pradesh, as per data reported by the State Government on online IMIS of SBM(G), is given at Annexure-2.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Shri Prahlad Singh Patel in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today.
