INDIAN COUNCIL OF MEDICAL RESEARCH (ICMR)

  • Set up in 1911 as Indian Research Fund Association (IRFA) with the specific objective of sponsoring & coordinating medical research in the country was re-designated in 1949 as the Indian Councii of Medical Research (ICMR) with expanded scope of functions.
  • The ICMR promotes biomedical research in the country through intramural as well as extramural research.
  • ICMR has off shelved an old technology of Vijayasar, and antidiabetic drug generated in the year 1999 to a company. This technology was outcome of the joint effect of Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM), Jammu (CSIR) and ICMR.

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT BOARD (MTAB)

  • The work has been initiated to set up a Medical Technology Assessment Board (MTAB) in the Department of Health Research.
  • The MTAB primarily aims to assess / evaluate the appropriateness and cost-effectiveness and essentiality of the available and new health technologies in India.

INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT

  • Tropical Diseases Research Centre (TDRC) is being established at RMRIMS, Patna with a vision to be a leading research centre for some of the identified tropical diseases viz., malaria, filariasis, IE, tuberculosis and diarrhoeal disease, etc.
  • The ICMR in association with the DST has established Asia’s first Biosafety Level – 4 (BSL-4) laboratories in the premises of the Microbial Containment Complex (MCC), NIV, Pune.
  • Foundation Stone was laid down on a 4 acre land acquired by NIIH at Chandrapur for development of a National Sickle Cell Anaemia and Haemoglobinopathy Research and Training Centre.
  • New building of the NIV, Field Unit Bengaluru was made functional and inaugurated on 25th March, 2014.

INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH IN AGEING

  • Efforts have been initiated to establish this Institute in a joint partnership with DST and Government of Kerala in Wayanad.
  • Efforts have been initiated to establish a Regional Medical Research Centre at Gorakhpur, UP, Centre on Vaccine Preventable Diseases, National Centre for Primate Breeding & Research, Sasunavghar, Maharashtra, National Animal Resource Facility for Biomedical Research at Genome Valley, Hyderabad, etc.
