Saina Nehwal finished runner up at the Badminton World Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia after a 16-21, 19-21 defeat to defending champion Carolina Marin of Spain.
Saina played a fantastic tournament to become the first Indian to reach the final of the world championship.
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has congratulated Ms. Saina Nehwal on winning the Silver Medal at the World Badminton Championships.
Saina Nehwal failed in her quest to become first Indian women’s player to win a gold medal at the World Championship after she lost her final match against defending champion and number one seed Carolina Marin (Spain) 16-21 19-21 in Jakarta.
Earlier in the quarter final, she beat former world champion and Olympic silver medalist Wang Yihan of China.
In the semi final, Saina triumphed over home favorite Lindaweni Fanetri in straight games. After leading early in both sets, Saina let go of the advantage and ended up the second best.
She becomes the first Indian player to win a silver at World Championship.
