- Around 95% of India’s trade by volume and 68% in terms of value is transported by sea. As on 31 December 2014, India had a fleet strength of 1209 ships with gross tonnage (GT) of 10.3 million, with the public-sector Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) having the largest share of around 31%. Of this, around 358 ships with 9.1 million GT cater to India’s overseas trade and the rest to coastal trade.
- Despite having one of the largest merchant shipping fleets among developing countries, India’s share in total world dead weight tonnage (DWT) is only 1.1% as on 1 January 2014. In 2013, as per UNCTAD, India with 10.7 million twenty-foot equivalent units of container (TEUs) and a world share of 1.6% ranked eighth among developing countries in terms of container ship operations.
- India continues to be a leading ship-breaking destination. It topped the list of ship-recycling countries in 2014 (January to October) with a world share of 32%, scrapping 234 ships of 7.98 million DWT as per the ISL Shipping Statistics and Market Review.
- India is also a major supplier of seafarers to the world. According to BIMCO/ISF Manpower Update 2010-2014, India supplied 60,000 crew (fresh seamen) and 44,500 officers in 2014.
