World Tourism Day was celebrated on 27th September since 1980 to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value.
The theme of this year is ‘Tourism for all – promoting universal accessibility’.
Celebrating the day, India focussed on cleanliness, security and better connectivity of tourist areas to boost tourism in the country.
Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma in New Delhi said clean tourism is the dream of the Ministry.
To give impetus to the cleanliness initiative, the minister appealed that polythene would be banned at all tourist spots from October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
On this occasion, the minister flagged off ‘Swachh Paryatan Run’ and a special sightseeing tour of the monuments and museums in Delhi for Divyang children.
Mr Sharma also presented awards to Rewarding Ministry of Tourism Offices, its organisations and of a painting competition organised by India Tourism.
