Baglihar Power Project Inaugurated

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated stage-II of 450 megawatt Baglihar Hydel Power Project raising its total installed power generation capacity to 900 megawatt.

The stage-I of the project with a similar installed capacity was commissioned over river Chenab in Ramban district in 2008. The project is a state sector Hydel project being run by State Power Development Corporation.

Lying in the mountainous and rugged terrain of middle Himalayas, it is a run of the river hydel project over Chenab. Expression Project Contact ((EPC) for the project was signed on March 31, 2012 and it has been commissioned as per target in September 2015.

The project comprise of an already constructed 143 meter high concrete gravity dam during the first phase. After generation of power, water is led back to river Chenab through draft tubes, downstream surge chamber, collection gallery and 350 meter long tail race tunnel.

The project has been designed in a manner that 430 cumecs of river water get discharged from its reservoir through a 1888 meter long and 10.15 meter diameter concrete lined circular head race tunnel and then into a 27.50 meter diameter concrete lined surge shaft of 79.5 meter height above orifice level.

The project will generate power between May and September every year and annual generation from stage-II will be about 1,302 million units.

Baglihar Dam also known as Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project, is a run-of-the-river power project on the Chenab River in the southern Doda district of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. This project was conceived in 1992, approved in 1996 and construction began in 1999.

The Dan consists of five spillway blocks, each of 17 meter width, three chute spillways of 12 meter width each and one auxiliary spillway of 6 meter width. There are seven non-overflow blocks on the left bank and six non-overflow blocks on the right bank.

The total length of the Dan at the top is 362.862 meter and roadway on its top is EL 843 meter allowing a free board of 3 meter. The 143 meter high dam has the deepest foundation level at EL 700 meter.

Prime Minister said that the government is committed to provide uninterrupted power to every home by 2022 when India will be celebrating its 75th years of independence.

He also inaugurated four laning project of Udhampur- Banihal on Jammu-Srinagar National highway. Prime Minister Modi said that road connectivity is must for development and his government is working on it.
