 TECHNOLOGY UP-GRADATION

  • The IT Modernization Project of Department of Posts is a Mission Mode e- governance Project which aims at transforming the Department of Posts operational processes and systems and enhancing service efficiency, as well as Departments capabilities for introducing new services and facilities for the customers.
  • The implementation of the Project started in the year 2012-13 and is expected to be operational by 2015-16. The Data Centre has been commissioned at Navi Mumbai and is operational.
  • Four ATMS have been commissioned.
  • 2136 post offices have gone live with the new Postal Life Insurance (PLI) application.
  • All the 25,145 Department post offices across the country have already been computerized.

 NEW AND VALUE ADDED SERVICES

    • Speed Post: Speed Post service was introduced in 1986 to provide fast and time-bound delivery service between seven major cities in the country. Since then the network has been expanded across all major cities in the country. This service offers time-bound and assured delivery of letters, documents and parcels weighing upto 35 kg.
    • E-Post: e-Post service enables people to send messages or scanned images electronically across the country. People who would not normally have access to internet are able to send and receive messages without possessing an email id thereby bridging the digital divide in the field of public communication system.
    • E-Payment: e-Payment is a facility offered by Department of Posts for accepting payment of bills, fees, taxes etc. in post offices. The amount collected is consolidated electronically and the information is available to the e-Payment user organization.
    • E-Post Office: The e-Post Office portal offers selected postal services to its customers through internet. Presently, purchase of Philatelic Stamps, payment of Premia for Postal Life Insurance and Rural Postal Life Insurance and purchase of e-IPO (Electronic Indian Postal Order) for Indian citizen abroad and Indian citizen living in India can be done through the portal. The customer can make payment on the portal using debit card or credit card.
    • Retail Post: With Retail Post, Department of Posts is leveraging the vast network of more than 150,000 post offices across India. Retail post benefits the common man by providing a range of products and services viz., Passenger Reservation System for booking of rail tickets, hotel booking, sale of HMT watches, sale of forms of various recruitment agencies etc.
    • Parcel Services: The parcel services were revamped in 2013. Accordingly Express Parcel and Business Parcel services were introduced in 2013.
